Todays Show Me Your Pedalboard entry comes from Jon! Jon’s working with a pretty modest board, but size never matters when it comes to what works for you! Let’s check out what Jon’s working with:
Things start out into an SFX Microthumpinator. According to Jon the pedal is on “double duty” and in his words acts as “an always on buffer, and…it removes subharmonic artifacts from my signal.” The SFX Microthumpinator is a micro version of SFX’s Thumpinator which is a “bandwidth optimizer” designed specifically for bass. From SFX “It removes the low frequency signals that are outside the range of notes produced by bass guitars.” From what I gather it keeps bass frequencies within a certain optimal threshold. I’d have to compare this specific pedal and how it differs from your standard compressor.
Very interesting, I’d have to give one of these a try, but for now I have my ever present and my number one pedal, the BOSS CS-2 compressor. After the Thumpinator is a TC Electronics Polytune Mini followed by a Fairfield Circuitry Accountant Compressor. I’ve seen this pop up on other boards recently, no experience with this particular compressor, but we at PedalsAndEffects love Fairfield’s Four Eyes Fuzz and Meet Maude Analog Delay! Fairfield Circuitry is a great small, boutique company, keep an eye on them!
The compressor is backed up by a BOSS OC-2 Octaver (the OC-2 Octaver, and OC-2 Octave are the same, just rebranded pedals). Next in the signal chain is a CBC (Clones by Chris) Super Fuzz, modeled after the Univox Super Fuzz pedals. CBC looks like a very recent entry into the pedal making game, I love seeing guys like this get their start. They look like they’ve got a great variety of cloned pedals too! Very cool! After the clone comes a Darkglass Microtubes Vintage Overdrive followed by a Solidgold FX Beta Superdrive. Jon’s chain then ends in a JHS Colour Box preamp. Honestly if it were me I would move the Colour Box as close to the beginning of the signal chain as possible (it’s a preamp not a postamp!), but I imagine that the Thumpinator must have an interesting effect on your tone and the rest of your pedals. Honorable mention to the Hotone Wally Looper.
I got nothing against the One Spot, but if you’re looking for a great way to power your pedals, you can’t go wrong with the Voodoo Labs pedal power or T-Rex Fuel Tank. Both have proper voltage and grounding for your pedals so you can power all of your effects without the “noise” generated from daisy chaining a single power cable. Some pedalpowers allow you to manipulate how much power some pedals get, to kind of emulate a dying 9volt battery if you’re into that sort of thing.
